Showcasing Artists

BROOKE COMBE

Wed 21 Sept | 8:30 PM
Venue: MOONDOO 📍 Reeperbahn 136, 20359 Hamburg

These are good times for independent musicians who won’t or can’t spend copious amounts of money on rental studios or expensive equipment. A guitar, a camera and a bit of courage might just be all you need to be catapulted from your bedroom straight into the eyes of the public these days. With her wonderfully soulful cover of the Arctic Monkey song “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?”, Brooke Combes has done just that: hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube and Twitter saw the young singer songwriter doing a live recording of her debut single “Are You with Me?” at Parr Studios with James Skelly (The Corals) and Charlie Salt (Blossoms) – a product of last year’s lockdown summer, that nevertheless radiates a pure lust for life. Combe underlines this with her guitar licks and the soul in her voice, over which she intuitively intones lyrics full of courage and self-confidence. Her music has character, pop appeal and an unerring nose for rhythm. No wonder that the Arctic Monkeys are contemplating taking her on tour. But first, she’s coming to play for us this September.

TAMZENE

Sat 24 Sept | 9:40 PM
Venue: IMPERIAL THEATER 📍 Reeperbahn 5, 20359 Hamburg

Tamzene understands how to channel the spirit of her home in the Scottish Highlands into her songs with great sensitivity. Hearing the young singer and multi-instrumentalist accompany songs like “Called You Out” live on piano, it’s impossible to deny that you’re witnessing a truly exceptional talent with a elfin voice that has the ability to send your imagination racing. Inspired by Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone, as well as Solange or James Bay, Tamzene crafts an immersive mixture of soul and R'n’B, of contemporary production and sublime vintage patina. The resulting music feels timeless and even under an acapella setting is deeply touching, engaging and delivers fuel for inner discussion long after the sound has fallen silent. She has spent a lot of time writing and recording new material over the last two years, so fans of Tamzene can look forward to a particularly surprising yet intimate performance in September.

THE SNUTS

Thu 22 Sept | 7:40 PM
Venue: UEBEL & GEFÄHRLICH 📍 Feldstraße 66, 20359 Hamburg

The Snuts formed while all the band were still at school in West Lothian in the south of Scotland. Only intended as spare-time recreation, the four recorded lots of material over the years, including the debut single “Glasgow” and their breakthrough song “Seasons”, which was released in summer 2018 and earned them a slot at the TRNSMT festival. From then on, everything happened very fast: the EPs “The Matador” (2017) and “Mixtape” (2020) saw The Snuts’ loyal fanbase grow steadily, the UK press showered them with praise, while the band delivered their own stadium anthems at festivals across the UK, as well as at SXSW in Austin. All this legwork meant that by the time they released their debut studio album “W.L.” (2021), their sound, somewhere between indie, alternative and garage rock, was so finely honed that they entered the UK charts at number one. Afterwards, they not only supported The Kooks and Kings Of Leon, but also started playing their own regular sell-out gigs - and in September, they’ll be doing so here.

VLURE

Thu 22 Sept | 7:40 PM
Venue: NOCHTSPEICHER 📍 Bernhard-Nocht-Straße 69, 20359 Hamburg

Sat 24 Sept | 11:30 PM
Venue: DRAFTHOUSE 📍 Hans-Albers-Platz 20, 20359 Hamburg

Live shows serve as a kind of emotional release, Conor Goldie once said in an interview. With this statement, VLURE’s guitarist describes not only his own experiences but also that of his fans when the band performs songs like "Show Me How to Live Again" or "I Won't Run (From Love)" live on stage. Like most bands, the lockdowns have taken their toll on VLURE as well, but the five-piece from Glasgow has used the time to apply the finishing touches to their very own post punk revival – with great success. As sharp as obsidian, the results that can be heard on their debut EP "Euphoria" portray a band that draws inspiration from Echo & The Bunnymen as well as from 90s techno or industrial but manages to create something entirely novel from these influences. Lustfully wasteful but with an amazing sense for epic riffs, VLURE are an absolute force on stage, crying out for real change in this stagnant era.
